Young Children and Threat: A proposal

Headlines scream about targeted violence and targeted violence has become part of our national dialogue. As parents groups complain about the negative impact of active shooter drills, schools and providers of young children struggle with an increase in identification of children threatening acts of targeted violence. The biggest challenge is that there is little research or procedure for working with these younger children. This talk faces down the need for information by bringing together research and theory and tying it together with an excellent case presentation of a young child who scared a lot of people. It has the following pieces:

 ·       Putting it in context: child development and psychopathology

·       The impact of media on children

·       Fitting management to the child’s needs without colluding with their pathology

·       Working with the parents

Threat Assessment and Management for the Mental Health Professional

Hudson Valley Professional Development - 12/10/2021

virtual

We all want to stop future acts of targeted violence such as a school shooting or an incident of workplace violence.

Mental health practitioners are often asked to make critical decisions about people who are potentially violent, yet have little to no training in either assessing for violence or determining risk factors for targeted violence (which is different than reactive or emotional violence). Some risk factors will be familiar such as IPV (intimate partner violence) and some will be new such as "approach behaviors".

Join Dr. Stephanie Stein Leite, licensed as a psychologist in NY, CT, and MA and president of the New England Chapter of Threat Assessment Professionals and the Forensic Division of the CT Psychological Association in this three-hour primer to the world of threat assessment and management (TAM), the only preventative solution. Dr. Leite will present the difference between types of violence and explore basic threat assessment concepts.

Participants will leave understanding the cornerstones of TAM and the building blocks of processing a threat as a mental health practitioner or as part of a threat assessment team.

3 CEs are available for NYS LMHCs, LMSWs, LCSWs, LMFTs, LCATs and NYS Licensed Psychologists upon completion of training.

Join me in person to hear hear me talk about Response Style, the topic you never knew that you would love.

This is not a talk on lie detection: Response style and what it means

Can you tell if someone is lying? As much as I would like to think that I can, the research says I cannot. But, when we work as threat assessment professionals, the safety of others relies on our ability to get good data to make good decisions. Response style is the way that an interviewee responds to your questions. Learning what that means and how to use it to your advantage takes you one step closer to being a human lie detector, or at least, a truth focused reporter of fact. In this interactive presentation, viewers will learn about response style and its corollary – interviewer style, walking away with practical tools and greater awareness of the rubix cube of a good interview.

Dr’s Leite’s talk “This is Not a Talk on Lie Detection: Response Style and What it Means,” was featured on the first day of the conference along with a full slate of amazing presenters. The ATAP Virtual Threat Assessment Conference (VTAC) took place from October 28 & 29, 2020. The online, two half-day training, was designed to address major issues affecting our world and the threat assessment industry.

Fear in the time of COVID-19 - Combined Jewish Philanthropies Webinar - 4/30/2020

As we navigate the current Covid-19 crisis we face many challenges, including maintaining a sense of community as we take steps to protect the physical health of ourselves, our families, and the people we serve. Crises have a direct impact on our mental health and well-being as well as our daily lives and relationships with others. We hope you will join us for this important conversation with Dr. Stephanie Leite, who will address common issues that arise for individuals, families, and communities when dealing with the fear and anxiety that accompanies a disaster and how to recognize common signs of psychological distress. She will also suggest resources and coping mechanisms that individuals and organizations can use to lessen the mental and emotional strain during times of crisis.
